Editor’s review
The iPhone 17 is the best standard iPhone ever and the most significant upgrade over a previous generation in years — 120Hz display, better cameras, improved front camera, and the A19 chip all combine to make the iPhone 16 feel outdated. At its price it sits between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 Pro. The its price premium over the iPhone 16 is justified by the 120Hz display alone.
Buy it if you:
Want 120Hz on a standard iPhone — the iPhone 16 doesn't have it
Are upgrading from iPhone 13, 14, or 15 — the jump is substantial
Want the best selfie camera Apple has ever made on a standard model
Prefer a lighter, more compact phone vs the Pro Max
Consider alternatives if you:
Need telephoto zoom — the iPhone 17 has no telephoto lens (iPhone 17 Pro adds it)
Already own an iPhone 16 — the upgrade is meaningful but not essential
Are open to Android — Samsung S25 Ultra or OnePlus 13 offer more specs per rupee

Yes u2014 the 120Hz display is the most noticeable daily improvement. If you use your phone for social media scrolling, gaming, or anything with motion, the difference is immediately visible. The improved front camera and A19 chip compound the upgrade.
The Pro adds: 48MP telephoto (5x optical zoom), USB 3 data speeds, ProRes video recording, titanium frame (vs aluminium), and a slightly larger/more detailed camera system. If you don't shoot telephoto, the standard 17 saves its price.
